This week Los Angeles received record rainfalls. Media says it's the worst rain to hit Los Angeles in over a decade. The Winter Shelter system was kicking thousands of homeless people out into the nasty weather. Mark Horvath, the founder of InvisiblePeople.tv [http://invisiblepeople.tv] and outreach case manager for PATH Achieve Glendale [http://achieveglendale.org], used the power of social media to keep the National Guard Armories open during the day [http://bit.ly/hBJr0K and http://bit.ly/gOai7h] The People's Fleet lent Mark and PATH Achieve Glendale a Ford Fiesta to help with their work fighting homelessness.

First we made a flier, then we made a mailing request, then we made copies, then we printed our mailing labels, then we made more copies, then we folded the copies, then we stuffed them in envelopes, then we closed the envelopes, then we placed the mailing labels on the envelope, then we stamped the envelopes with our logo, then we put postage on all the envelopes and finally we dropped them off at the post office in the ford fiesta. that is what we call a mailing.
Who needs professional actors when you have community actors. All we need is some sketches and character development. El libro: the studios bookworm. El Parque: the muscular, informative, helpful know it all. La Muerte: evil, liar and comedian. El martillo: the hammer, a depressed guy, treated badly by life, unemployed. Community actors add their own spark and make teatro so much fun.
When we ask members for ideas on event planning. They usually say lets have a theatre component. i usually hesitate because its a lot of work. Then, I think and realize that teatro is usually what people respond to the best. Its fun, its creative, its educational and it brings the community together. After breaking my head to write a teatro piece based on their ideas I needed the members( aka: the stars) to be picked up for our first practice.
Sometimes when you are doing outreach you find that you have to deal with the elements. Sometimes its 100 degree weather and sometimes its rain. Our member and organizers got caught in the rain. This weather doesn't make for good outreach.

Mentor Penny Scott initiated a second Newsletter Workshop in which the girls share their poems, essays and ideas in a magazine that is distributed to all of the girls there, family and staff. We were loaned a Ford Fiesta car and two Flip cameras for one week to show how their vehicle helped us with our programs. On our fourth day, Thursday, October 14, 2010, Founder and Executive Director Jill Gurr went to Downey in South Central for training by the Department of Probation in how to mentor incarcerated youth. She then met the landlord of Create Now's new office downtown to sign the lease and went over renovations needed before our move on November 5th. From there, Jill drove the Fiesta to Mac Hollywood to drop off her broken computer. In the evening, she visited Aviva Family & Children's Services in Hollywood (a group home for 40 teenage foster girls who have been abused, neglected, abandoned and orphaned) to evaluate our Creative Writing Workshop (funded by Oprah's Angel Network) with mentor Inga Hanson. Aviva's Volunteer Coordinator Johanna Susal also talks about the program.

We were loaned a Ford Fiesta car and two Flip cameras for one week to show how their vehicle helped us with our programs. On our third day, Wednesday, October 13, 2010, we visited Baby2Baby, a charity in mid-city that donates gently-used baby equipment, clothing, toys and supplies to needy families. We packed the Fiesta with stuff: a highchair, swing, bath, stroller, car seat, bags of clothing, toys and lots more. Then we drove down to Compton (around 24 miles from our office) to surprise our mentees Demond and Virginia Nelson who are expecting their baby girl Destiny next month. Since these two youth didn't have anything for their new arrival and no car or money to buy necessary supplies, it was a terrific surprise.

Why we are hyped on the new Ford Fiesta!
These are the kids who benefit from the good works we are all doing in Watts.
Elemental Awareness sponsors an afterschool skateboard program in Watts. We just made another drop of product to keep the program going so that the kids have boards to ride. Big shout out to PJ Harris for all he does for the kids in Watts.
Elemental Awareness has been supporting skateboarding in Watts for almost a decade. We went to visit a newly built skatepark at one of the centers we have worked with in the area to do some Guerrilla Giving.
EA supports a second chance charter school for skateboarders in Venice, LA. Director, Todd Larson visited the school to give words of inspiration to the kids along with some goodies to take home.
Elemental Awareness is founded upon the belief that a person can positively impact their world through an active involvement in their passions. By using our programs as the vehicle, we aim to encourage confidence and instill the realization that it is possible to be successful in life by doing what you love.

Someone Cares Soup Kitchen provides a nutritional and tasteful meal to the less fortunate in the community; a meal that they would be proud to serve their own family at home, a well-balanced meal made fresh daily consisting of vegetable soup, lettuce and fruit salads, hearty and filling side dishes, breads and muffins, desert, milk and water. Currently the Soup Kitchen is serving over 300 guests per day, 7 days per week.
